IBD is suggested by the presence of one or more of a variety of signs and symptoms that can be gastrointestinal (GI) (e.g., abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, perianal fistulae), systemic (e.g., weight loss, fatigue, growth failure in children), or extraintestinal (e.g., Webtectin and lactoferrin. Blood biomarkers include C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedi-mentation rate (ESR). Research has shown that these biomarkers are useful in predicting IBD activity, but they are also present in other GI dis-eases.
